I think that the best way to wake people from their sleepwalking is when reality affects their lives and they are most likely to pay attention.
Engage people when something happens that impacts their lives (a school closing, foodstamp cuts, a shooting...)is also a good opportunity for campaigns to engage with potential supporters. It uses people's attention while the issue is fresh to establish a hotline to them. It's non-partisan. And once that connection is made, it can be used to mobilize them over time.
Democracy Labs created MakeItFast.org as a *free* resource for progressive groups for this task. It can create a channel for outreach to people affected by an issue. Think of a channel as an online version of a TV channel and that people can choose and subscribe to - anonymously (no phone number, no texts messages, no email needed).
The channel can then be used to share information. An outreach channel can be set up in minutes. It can be hyper-local. Subscribers can be sent messages immediately to their phones or laptops.
Remarkably prescient/prophetic, written before 2.0, when things already seemed to be as bad as they could get. Thank you for the re-run, Mr. Olear; I wasn't reading you back then.
I had originally added something here about "the writing was actually already on the wall" during Trump 1.0, and then I remembered the origin of that expression. (From Daniel 5:25, and it's in Aramaic, for anyone who doesn't immediately recognize it):
"Mene, mene, tekel, upharsin"
As in Hebrew, Aramaic only has written consonants; in the absence of the optional diacritical marks, the vowels in between must be interpreted from context, which of course leads to verbing and many puns, as well as prophetic license. From Zondervan Academic:
"In his interpretation of what it meant, Daniel actually interprets three words that use the same consonants but can be translated as verbs.
He told the king that the writing meant:
God had numbered the days of his kingdom.
He had been weighed in the balance and was found wanting.
God was going to divide his kingdom among the Medes and Persians."
I would just love to see the expression on Trump's face if those words appeared written by a moving finger on the wall of the Oval Office. He would probably have a heart attack, if he only had a heart.
