Thought provoking ideas as always. Might as well be cracking jokes as we line up for the "showers". Did you put a down payment on some place to live? I sure would if I could.
Welcome Back !! Rev James Lawson Jr. discusses that responses to evil should be met with positive responses. He came to mind first and I will have to go back to Revolutionary Nonviolence, Organizing for Freedom. What a song. Reading the excerpt about the hidden punchline.....that's where we are 6 months into the mes...., ordering the book. Big thanks too. I finished the Kindly Ones, though I flipped thru his final fantasies at the end the story will remain with me. It was a good follow up to Stalingrad by Vasily Grossman. I ordered "An Inconvenient Place," by Littell which arrived yesterday and he discusses Grossman quite a bit, they are tied in.
Looking forward to reading about your trip. You have an extra beat in your writing indicating a fabulous vacation!!
P.S. I have Defying Hitler.. it got moved around from my next read pile.. got it!
I am so glad you mentioned it. I have it front and center on my work table. I am halfway into an Inconvenient Place Littell's writing is visceral the section I am reading has Littell and his partner walking door to door in Bucha speaking with survivors of the atrocity there. I am looking forward to Defying Hitler, Thank you!
Oh, I'm fine with it. I think I resent everyone treating them like they're big heroes for doing what they always do, but very late. No, have not seen Bystander...thx!
Always enjoy your insights, Greg. In my view on this horror show, we are descending from the level of pond silt right into the mucky bottom. This admin is inciting inhumanity and seeking to unleash the Hannibal Lecter they're sure is lurking in each of us. There's a strange little non planet that HubbleWebb telescope spotted about 20 years ago. Named it Eris. Eris shows us "uncomfortable truths" that are being ignored. Whether you can wrap your brain around astrology or not, astronomically Eris is making geometrical shapes with other planets in our solar system. Astrologically, these indicate seismic shifts in society, culture, political structures. In other words, we are witnessing the muck begin to fly. It's going to get really ugly. It has to to wake the sleepers.
I learned about Howard Stern when my (nice, fun) boss gave me a lift from the office. He always drove to work on Wall Street with 2or 3 other guys. They (in their 40’s) thought Stern was hilarious and listened religiously. I compare him to Limbaugh, who I didn't know about at the time either. How many men are really still 8th graders at heart? (How many women would be if they didn’t have to worry about taking care of little children?)
Anyway, many years later, when I was 40 myself, I rented a room with a young colleague we’d recently hired. One evening, before he & his pals left for an evening on the town, there was something on tv. I don’t watch tv so I don’t even remember the name of the show, but it was Howard Stern-ish (IMO). It was appalling. I remember an episode where the guy running the program volunteered to drive some youngsters home from a nightclub around 3:00 am. One of them said “ok, but you can’t come inside, because I CAN’T (not don’t want to) wake up my dad who has to get up SUPER early for work.” Of course they all barged in behind the kid making a ton of noise, waking the father up, traipsing around the house …. The poor kid was cringing.
We teach our youngsters to have respect for others - but the ones that don’t then run roughshod over the rest of us.
DJT should have been stopped YEARS ago but everyone let him get away with being a jerk, a bully and a liar.
Read “Commander in Cheat”. DJT doesn’t just cheat from time to time in golf. He cheats on every hole. People don’t mind and still play with him because “he’s fun.” (He then lies about even his made up score - embellishing it at every telling.)
He may be fun to golf with, like Bush may have been fun to have a beer with - but can’t we come up with some real credentials before letting people like this into running the country?
Frankly, whoever put him in office - the money mongers and the powerful groups and corporations, and the gangster class spread across the US - all need to be stuck in the middle of a Florida swamp for a few years, too.
How is Alligator Alcatraz not 'cruel and unusual punishment?' It is at least on par with Trump's term in office.
I understand why Stern was popular, especially back then, but I never dug it. And I was in the minority. Trump has codified unseriousness. That thing yesterday with the wrestlers and LT? What a joke.
Welcome back Greg! I was in Barcelona for the first time last October and fell in love with that city. It is now my favorite of all the major European capitals. It has the beauty and orderly nature of Paris with the friendliness of Rome. Actually going back there next August for two weeks for a Big Birthday! Was also in Montserrat on a gorgeous sunny but cold day in October. We were able to go into the Cathedral that was having a mass. Pictures doesn't do it justice. Looking forward to hearing/reading all about your trip.
Gotta fight fire with fire, Greg. I’ve chastised myself for stooping (Ok, slithering on the ground) to trump’s level, but this is War. If it’s being “nasty” then nasty it is. My ex Mother-in-law mother was a wee lass from Helensburg, Scotland, and twas dearly loved, so I’ve enjoyed hearing the Scottish brogues this week & the way they make fun of & deal w trump. Mock him to Death!
I'm glad they're doing it, but I resent these grotesquely wealthy guys recycling their old material to hit at Trump, this late in the game, and then getting all the flowers. Probably it's just me being petty lol.
I think the lowering of humor now is in reaction to the fact that THIS just isn't funny anymore. When Trump was flailing around in his first term ("biggest crowd EVER for an inauguration!" "The Wall!" "Very fine people on both sides!", the comedy wrote itself, and no one thought it could possibly go on past 2020. Then when losing the election in 2020, many people thought that we'd, at last, dodged the bullet for the rest of time. Last year's election showed the hubris of that thought process, and now time has slowed down. It feels like a year or two since January 20th, and the goal of ridding ourselves of him on January 20, 2029, seems far enough away that it might as well be unattainable. It's sad and simply too much to put up with, AGAIN, but here we are.
South Park had been built up in my mind by commentary during the two days before I watched it, and you're right, it was mean and not very effective. People were praising it up and down, and I had a very "meh" feeling about it. We've literally seen it all before in "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut," a 27-year-old movie. I think South Park is just exhausted, as are we all.
Welcome Back, Greg! Hope Spain was all you hoped it could be. Did you go house-hunting? LOL
When Cheney shot that guy in the face, Jon Stewart didn't make any jokes. For the whole show, he just kept repeating "The vide president of the United States accidentally shot his friend in the face." Little did he know things would get way way worse...
I think I'm reacting more to all the praise being strewn on these gazillionaires for doing what they should have done years ago.
It's nice to be home...sort of? But I'd love to go back.
TGIF🎉🎉🎉Welcome back!

that though is now always in a cabinet of our mind
We did check the real estate sites...

I'm almost done, and I think it's the most important book I've read about all of this. Wonderfully written and also, alas, urgently relevant.
I am so glad you mentioned it. I have it front and center on my work table. I think it was Saul Alinklsky who said something like "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon."
Satire can take many forms. It can be clever. It can be mean spirited. But as long as it's punching back in some way, I'm fine with it.
Have you been reading the latest issues of The American Bystander? They're really on point.
Oh, I'm fine with it. I think I resent everyone treating them like they're big heroes for doing what they always do, but very late. No, have not seen Bystander...thx!
I'm glad you're back. I need to watch last night's show. 8 pm is too late for this old lady.
It's too late for us, too, tbh.
Welcome back to the show.
to the show that never ends...
Maybe South Park kept it simple enough for Trump supporters to understand?
Hopefully.
Welcome back Greg!
Thanks, John!

Interesting. I always think of Trump as a Plutonic force, what with the criminality and all. As it is, this is not sustainable.
Thanks for sharing this!

It is, but the Supreme Court now just ignores amendments it doesn't like.
I understand why Stern was popular, especially back then, but I never dug it. And I was in the minority. Trump has codified unseriousness. That thing yesterday with the wrestlers and LT? What a joke.

My grand nephew recently spent a semester in Spain. He LOVED it and especially Barcelona. Sounds like a winner for many.
Thanks, Anita! I'm definitely going back. So much left to be explored! It's a great city...with a history of fighting fascists.

Good points, thanks. Trump also called Canadians “nasty.” You can imagine what many of us call him🙄 And we’re not kidding!
That's a badge of honor!
Per usual I’ve learned something.
Another gem that doesn’t exist in the mainstream. Thank you 😊
Thank you!
