Morning thoughts on Russian war crimes, Putin's lies and betrayals, the Trump Administration's incompetence, and the flawed thinking in the Ukraine "peace" talks
Yes war truly sucks, but are there times when they are necessary? It takes at least two to make war. Hitler and Hirohito attacked, war stage one. Europe and US responded, war stage two. Diplomacy is always the better option but works only when there are discussable items, land grab not among them.
Absolute pacifism doesn't bring about the desired results. Ukraine now needs to fire missiles at Russia, for example. They did not choose to and would rather not, but what is the alternative?
Deals with liars are meaningless. Putin will continue his quest to recreate the old Russian empire.
Deals with the Republican invertebrates are impossible until if and hopefully when, they realize their dear leader is a quisling imbecile and democracy is worth fighting for.
Cats wisely know who to trust. Anyone who doesn’t like cats & dogs (or is mean to them) can’t be trusted.
Thank you Greg. As a dinosaur I had the understanding but not the image in my head that the way Netanyahu and Putin were tracking targets using drones was from a video game. I am glad you tied both nations atrocities together in conversation. Left out polite because in a conversation this becomes controversial and uncomfortable. A well appreciated column. I had my window open yesterday and my girl loved it too. Better get to that now! a P.S. She jumped right to the sill thank you. I was thinking about the would Peace in italics it reminded me of the introduction of the smiley face. One evening at our dining room table my Dad turned to me and said "and what's with the Smiley's?" We use the smiley face every day and we are having the word peace thrown at is by the trump regime. I have a World Peace, and a flag with a Peace Sign flying with my Stand With Ukraine flag. But I mean that Ukraine should have Peace on her terms, not the way we hear it used as you describe. Language is so important, Havel discusses how it can be used or abused in The Power of the Powerless.
Outrageous to put it mildly I am on train looking forward to NYPHIL matinee. Magic flute and wooden prince. Ties in perfectly with Alice today. Going to hopefully break into M K Ghandi non violent resistance Satyagraha. This world in less than 100 days feels like we are being torn inside out all the while being dipped in hot oil sprayed dipped Thank you. I love reading your column

Thanks Greg for this information that some of us know and the many don't. But "the many" are starting to notice that the cost of eggs and gas are still expensive.
Putin and Trumps overall position is Dictatorship not Democracy.
We have neighbors that tried to befriend us a few years ago and I told my husband to be careful. We don't know who people are anymore, even if they seem "normal", but I was right. They are Trumpers. We went back and forth for dinner at each other's houses but I am done with that. No more.
I drove by their house today and the American Flag is out. WTH! Is this to commermorate Trump's 100 Days in office next week? Is this week a national holiday now?
If there is a heaven, Pope Francis is certainly there and we need some divine intervention at this point!
Anita, good for you ‘to try’ with your neighbors. I have a nodding acquaintance with most of the people on my street. My big 2 yr old standard poodle Gabriel certainly helps. He snuggles up to greet whomever approaches. Yesterday, I stopped and as Gabriel did his
part, a man whom I thought might be maga (but NO flag), talked with me about what’s happening with teslas…I own one from 2021…wondering if anyone had attacked mine. (It now has a beautiful Ukrainian flag bumper sticker to be joined soon with NATO & Canadian window stickers:-) He thought people who burned teslas ought arrested. This guy really loves cars. I nodded and replied about E misfit’s destruction & invasion of our democratic institutions without his ever being elected. It was a. very to & fro conversation with respect. He said at last, ‘we’ll continue this conversation.’
I have to say, he was not very well informed; but he’s a very kind man. My pup certainly likes him!
Thank you Greg for talking about those horrendous drones that follow Ukrainians as well as Palestinians. Barbaric. Terrifying.
My neighbors have a standard poodle. He is adorable. Still not enough to make me want to be friends if they support Trump. Good luck with your Tesla. I am not into that violence because most people bought them before Elon showed what an asshat he was. The Cybertruck might be a different story....
Thanks, Samani. It's always great to hear about engagement like that, because I think that ultimately there's more than unites us than divides us, corny as that sounds.
The re-election of Trump makes us, in the world's eyes, and some of our own, a third-world shithole nation that can no longer be trusted to be a serious country, so I don't really understand just WHAT we're doing being involved in any "peace talks" between what should be Russia and Ukraine. Europe has FAR more credibility in a position like that, and they also have far more to lose if Putin is successful in his march toward USSR v2.0. But, if we're involved, and it seems we are, the very first demand should be that Ukraine is AT THE TABLE. WTF?
What they're doing, Trump and his buddy Vladimir, is continuing to sideline Zelenskyy; Putin because he doesn't even consider Ukraine a sovereign country or Zelenskyy a real leader, and Trump because of his PERSONAL issues with Zelenskyy, who didn't, "do him a favor, though." Where does this end? There are no "good actors" at the table right now, so I can't imagine. I continue to stand with Ukraine, and against Russia, as every real American should!
This ends when Russia is returned to a rural state. They're revolutionaries bent on stealing everything they can. Give them no breaks, give them nothing, not even respect.
Chump is like the 500-pound gorilla, goes where he wants these days. With the full power of the presidency. The ultimate usurper, the flim flamer of fools, the feckless pretender who sticks with the big lie that has swept his minority into power. I love America and will save it. He will save the spoils for Vlad. Destroyer from within, as predicted by many…
I think at the end of the day Trump wants a "deal," and by "deal," he means a personal deal to benefit HIM, not the US. Putin has dangled the stupid Trump Tower Moscow forever. Crimea is a beach resort place. That they are negotiating without Zelenskyy is just dumb.
Trump and Putin are two evil peas in a pod. Only that one has the upper hand with tons of Kompromat on the obese stooge to make sure he follows his orders with the reward of obscene wealth and power. Sadly I was aware back in 2006 while still living in London what the future had for us from the mouth of Alexander Litvinenko, as he was dictating his last words to his wife Marina and his publisher Alex Goldfarb. Never to be forgotten as his most lethal poisoning took place in Mayfair, 3 miles away from my home. I bought the book in 2008 and read it several times not wanting to believe that he was warning us about the future of the West, specially the US. That minuscule, evil excuse of a man wanted RETRIBUTION for the collapse of the Soviet Union. And who was he? A nobody KGB agent in Dresden. One difference from the imbecile is that he was clever and knew how to climb the ranks of an already criminal government, thanks to the drunkard Boris Yeltsin.
And we should have known, back then, what the deal with Putin was and treated him accordingly. But no. So much "reset." He's played us for years. It's disgraceful.
It's always terrifying when something awful happens for close to home.
For nearly 85 years we have been paying trillions of American dollars to protect Europe and ourselves from Hitler, then the Soviet Union and then Putin regimes, from serious wars to revolutionary incursions and general military belligerency. WWII cost trillions, the reconstruction of Europe more trillions, and then the fucking defense of Europe and ourselves from the USSR and now Putin even more trillions.
I think we need to end that...with ending Putin and Russia and their whole revolutionary ideology framework and theft of resources. Not by leaving, but by ending Putin and Russia...kaputnik. No mas. Fortunately, I think Ukraine and Zelensky understand this explicitly. Defeat Russia while you can...trump and his Russian goons will be trying to even the odds, fools that they are.

When it was learned Noem had her purse stolen, she should have been fired within seconds. If you can't keep up with a purse with $3k, you don't need to be in the US govt., much less any government office, period.
Could that money be “protection money” from one of the many legal immigrants she happened to bump into? All cosmetic surgery is paid by us, the taxpayers. So why the cash?
The cost of arming Ukraine to the teeth would have been infinitesimal compared to what we will now pay to half-ass things. So stupid. So short-sighted.
However, I don't think it is the whole nation. Not even half the nation. We're seeing people with very poor or almost no good judgment at all. Noem could have given he puppy away easily, but what this really points to is a lack of foresight...that is the key signature of the whole trump regime. The leader has a criminal gangster mindset and a quite narrow understanding of this nation, its history or role in this world...the rest ain't got no sense at'all.
My ramble for today, read this three times, beware I am all over the fucking place, such is my current mindset.
History does not bode well for Ukraine, the history of actions by the US and Europe in particular and the world in general. The annexation of Crimea 1783 version. Fast forward to 2014, again another Russian annexation. Obama and Europe looked the other way, some feeble rhetoric and even more feeble sanctions. How many US and EU leaders over many years opposed Ukrainian membership of NATO? The orange imbecile's first term saw the ass kissing of Putin reach new heights with EU leaders grumbling a bit, emboldening the Tsar of Moscow. For all his good qualities Joe like Barack essentially paid lip service to an invasion. Putin is a master of managing sanctions, when in history have they ever truly worked. Note the Siege of Leningrad killed 1.5 million mostly innocent citizens but failed to accomplish its objective, no less was never classified for what is was, a war crime, another Great whitewash. The newest whitewashes, Gaza and of course multiple instances in Ukraine.
Japan paid a heavy price in WWII. Were Hiroshima and Nagasaki war crimes? As a once very proud American, my pride says no, rather a necessary evil that saved many lives. As an Old Man reflecting on life, the question certainly has merit. However such brute force saw Japan become a good citizen of the globe. Force worked, at least this time.
The point, this is not me advocating for dropping a nuclear warhead on Putin's ass although a Bond like precision certainly works for me. Giving Ukraine the arms needed to make the Kremlin war criminal take notice is the only way to get his attention. Joe and the EU had the chance to let the man without a soul (remember Joe's words) get the right message. Somehow they convinced themselves there was a soul and really messed up. Leaving the solution to the inept, dumbass orange imbecile was a really bad option. But then, this was not an option, how could America put a known traitor back into the Oval? Enter stage very right one fElon. Today EU leaders are still pandering to the US lead, as stupid as that is. Of course there will be the always present Tsarist nuclear threat and the destruction of not the world order but the physical world. Perhaps then a new, smarter and more caring phoenix will arise. Dangerous thinking? Certainly! Yet I am watching the destruction in real time of the country that gave me so much and I truly love (or is it loved?)
Time to go for the gusto!? BTW after Moscow Bond needs to get his ass to Tel Aviv.
Biden and Obama had no support for more stringent measures. Republicans had already decided that anything a democrat said was something to oppose. Democratic power, oddly enough was diminished with Obama’s election. Electing that “uppity nigger” just fueled the Tea Party, and the resistance of Mitch and the contingent of oligarchs supporting the “opposition.” He walked a fine line on the precipice every day of his terms. You are right about Ukraine in 2014 and recently, but having been witness to the vitriol against Obama and Biden in Texas just glad both survived their terms.
Very true, good point.. Biden, despite Republican's stated objective of letting him get nothing done, did pass important legislation. More of that with respect to the annexation in 2014 may have made a bigger difference today. Likely the color of Obama's skin did as you say harden Republican's resolve to the extreme.
I went into a gun shop near Ft Worth after Obama’s election and it had a poster of Obama in Crosshairs, with a skunk pic. - part black, part white. Abbott and all Texas repubs trash Biden non-stop. Seriously. Every week it gets scarier.
