This guy and his followers equate destruction with domination. That's one reason why he tore up the JCPOA. Since he has no other framework dealing with the Iranians than to control them with military action, it probably just seemed natural to follow up by threatening destruction of their heritage sites.
He has another year and change before he is indicted by the State of New York immediately upon his exit from the White House, if he lasts that long.(article)
