Again you write a very important piece. RESPECT! I agree 100%

Greg, while I totally agree with the substance of this piece, the headline premise WAS annoying clickbait and a real strain for a hook. Not to mention disparaging the immortal FDR by comparing Trump to him. Yes, Biden needs to be a 21st century FDR, but in no way, shape or form should he emulate Donald Trump.

I'm actually hoping he'll be dumb enough to RT it...

Given his state of mind right now, that's entirely possible. But he hasn't blocked you yet? ;)

First of all, you had me burst out laughing with the line about pot after pot of spaghetti. Then, you had me with your juxtaposition of FDR vs. djt. And finally, you had me with your call for consequences. No Archie this time! I will start writing to my legislators - at least the ones who have moral, which is hard to find in Florida.

That's a famous photo of Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin, probably THE most commonly used photo of any of those leaders. And why it's never occurred to me before, I don't know, but it just did: the reason they're seated is because Roosevelt was confined to his wheel chair by that point. Normally, that photo would have been of the three leaders standing together, but Churchill and Stalin sat because Roosevelt couldn't stand. Solidarity. A small thing, but worth stating.

my crush is now over a year old and so fulfilling! thanks for making insightful connections between the many pieces of the corruption puzzle. Nixon was mobbed up too. This mess is one for the record books. I hope Biden & Harris are brave, we need brave to navigate this mess. I want someone, somewhere to investigate the coziness of the Trump folks and the Russians. The fealty displayed by Donald suggests the hold on him is strong. Thanks Greg for a year of smart. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Greg. I wrote these comments on Sunday after the poetic narrative. But it did not seem to fit in the discussion. I have only read Maureen's comment below. And I read Greg's comment below.

Both made me think that possibly my comment may not belong here either. But I am going to post this rant in the vein of "we need to navigate this mess," The mess also belongs to those who represent us, or should represent us. Here goes.

Greg. Great writing as usual. This short Sunday Page has so much to write/comment about; it is lovely to reflect on Whitman and Paul Simon, some genuine feel good to balance out this tragic five-year chapter in our lives and our Nation, still on the brink. I may have said before, but the Guardians could have prevented this major threatening hack by the enemy, only if, the hack occurred in outer space.

I believe many people feel as I do, that Resident Donald Chernobyl Epstein Escobar Hitler Raper Racist Treason Corrupt Felon Trump, should die in prison of old age. I cannot fully understand that no one has the power to remove this virus from our American sad story. I also advocate that everyone should call it what it is, not Covid 19 but, the Trump Virus. Rabid dogs are still put to sleep.

One must place this flawed, vindictive middle school brat of a hoodlum criminal, alongside a congress and senate, (small letters), to see the real tragic saga of our government compromising the PEOPLE in the last 50 years. As the rock group “Steppenwolf” sang “Monster,” 50 years ago, it is not any better.

“There’s a monster on the loose, it’s got our head in a noose.” This song is just as reflective today as then. Think Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, and the biggest liars ever, General Westmoreland, Henry Kissinger, and our government. The saga continues, and it maybe even more atrocious. Why do we continue to live under this hardship? Elected officials suck. What happened to the oath of office?

Maybe it is time for another “Me Too” movement. We need more amendments to the Constitution. I would suggest that the 30th Amendment to help turn this mess around; ladies and gentlemen, let us offer up the Loyalty Amendment.

This Amendment will include a Recall Provision to remove members of the Congress and Senate. American citizens are not represented. Most of the duly elected members are corrupt and work for their own branches of government: Banking, Pharmaceutical, and Oil. They are in bed with Energy, the wealthy donors, and hide from us behind privilege, deceit, and power.

Let us “ME TOO” them for this Fuckery perpetrated on millions of us. We demand representation. What would Uncle Sam do if we stopped paying taxes…having zero withheld at the source.

Let us demand that a violation of the Oath of Office is a felony with disbarment and impeachment and a $5 Million fine. Perhaps some of this criminal behavior could be eliminated if we took the money out elections and politics.

A change in presidents does not assure us of compliance. What do you say? Rebellion? ME TOO!

I think the 14th Amendment already allows us to remove folks for plotting against the government. We just have to have politicians bold enough to use it. Which speaks to your point...

We've always just acquiesced to the idea that the Dems are "too nice." What if the current crop are AFRAID of something/anything/everything being released on them? I'm so beyond tired of Chuck and Nancy's ineffective moral superiority BS; it's no longer the world we live in. Grow a spine or get out and let the likes of AOC & others (who are NOT afraid to fight) lead. PS: Thanks for always leading on this charge.

I know what you mean, but AOC is not the answer. Leadership has to both fight for change AND unite everyone. She doesn't do the latter, which is arguably the most important part of the gig. Generally I think Nancy has handled things pretty well. I just wish she tried more stuff. Schumer, on the other hand...

Expand full comment

Agree to disagree...the nature of trying stuff requires a willingness to step out; not necessarily uniting people ahead of you, but getting a crowd to follow you. That's been Trump's talent. While Pelosi's demonstrated admirable spine in years past, the future is going to require more. I've never understood how or why Schumer qualifies as a leader.

I love how you've used contrast to clearly lay out the comparison between good and evil in this post. I wish I could add illustrations of what your writing makes me imagine in the comments. I was angry when I read the title before clicking on it, and even complained to my fiance, "Why would he compare Trump to FDR? Wasn't FDR a good guy in the end?" Thank you for clarifying that. It's clever.

I wish we could lock Mitch in a small dusty closet every time congress came into session and gave him a shitty low quality speaker that hardly works for him to listen to.

I am new to your works and I'm already a fan!

Thanks! I don't usually do this sort of clickbait title, but I was hoping Trump would RT it ha ha ha.
