True. And all it takes is one. But there were MAGA on the grand jury in NY, too, and they still voted to indict. Maybe the facts will bear out.

S B Lewis's avatar

Three strikes, you’re out; too many indictments -

Victoria Meyers's avatar

Ha Ha Ha - as if Greg O'Lear publishing a critical piece about the worst criminal in the world since Hitler is going to achieve didley shit to protect us from this criminal. I support Greg O'Lear of course, as at least he is telling the truth. But he is NOT TELLING THE WHOLE TRUTH - which includes the fact that Loretta Lynch is 100% guilty for where we are today!

It’s a three-cup ☕️☕️☕️Tuesday! 💫 Bravo, Greg!

Thank You Greg for the explicit recounting of the loooooong list of crimes. I tried to expose the pre-2016 list to my pro-trump friends but their eyes were stubbornly held shut. So...... its time for an explicit and concise (read: long) listing of the whole legal saga that defines the candidate(from youth to present) Do you have such a list in your notes? I would take it with me when 'door-knocking' resumes this Fall!!! I printed out pre-election (in 2016) and ran out of paper! (roughly 35 major legal cases)

Greg Olear's avatar

Thanks, Gary. I was contemplating making a full list, but it would be book-length, I think. Maybe a flier that highlights the big crimes will work for the door-knocking: sexual assault, rape, tax fraud, negligent homicide, espionage, seditious conspiracy. Yikes.

Gary March's avatar

Minimal prose but accurate data: link/court and decision date. When knocking for 2022 the 18 month list of Biden accomplishments really helped and several households asked for copies! I typed that one myself.... Would do the same if you came up with your own. Very helpful. Its (regrettably) too long a list to rattle off!! BTW: remember money laundering. And how does a person die of blunt chest trauma by rolling down her steps?

Victoria Meyers's avatar

You, like everyone else, are leaving out Loretta Lynch, who gave Trump his 'get out of jail free' card: his CI (Confidential Informant) status.

Peter's avatar

Dump will never see the inside of a prison cell. Should he be convicted of any or all of his crimes I have no doubt he will hop on Trump Force One and head for the UAE or some other country that will harbor him.

Elisabeth Iler's avatar

Good, better then the scumbag being on our dime.

Greg Olear's avatar

Harboring him will prove difficult for any country who wants to do business with us.

Victoria Meyers's avatar

Greg - I await your opinion on Loretta Lynch and her culpability for TRUMP.

Greg Olear's avatar

LB and I have a bet about that. I think he won't go, mostly because he's a homebody and won't like the food. There are similarities between him and Batista. I may write something about that at some point...

Peter's avatar

Hey, they have cooks who will burn him steaks in the UAE. All he needs is the ketchup. But I like the comparison to Batista, right down to the ties to the Cosa Nostra.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Is there a Colonel or Mac and Dons there, which would likely play into this story…

Peter's avatar

Mickey D's is everywhere. If not in the UAE, he can have it flown in from Europe.

Lisbeth Farnum's avatar

Great piece! To make understanding the scope of the trump crimes more appealing to his MAGA tribe we’d need to put it on tv, CSI/Dateline style with each episode focusing on one of his crimes. Could run for years! “Law & Order: Donald Trump Unit”

Elisabeth Iler's avatar

But, Lisbeth, could you bear to watch it? At least Law & Order has great characters....

William E. Becker's avatar

However, there is the monkey trap part of this, with the audience the monkey...you are involving the audience with DJT more, not less. And that familiarity can make someone an anti-hero and give them a larger audience than they already had.

Some, like this audience right here, will bug out or see it for what it is; but some really will not. Think Jesse James or Bonnie and Clyde. So, the best solution is really no attention...except by the courts. I can safely say we will never need 'more DJT.' Ever.

McLain's avatar

Yes! The hero/outlaw archetype. That is how they see him. They actually think he is some sort of Robin Hood type. Pathetic.

Greg Olear's avatar

A Robin Hood with a gilded toilet. SMH.

Karen Estby's avatar

Being ignored might be more painful for him than prison.

Elisabeth Iler's avatar

But even more painful for us! Lock the putz up forever. Really….

William E. Becker's avatar

If we can get the sonofabitch there, it probably would be his undoing.

Greg Olear's avatar

That's a great idea, actually. Get on this, MSNBC!

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Trump learned from two of the largest scum bags in Roy Cohn and his father, both of whom were mob connected scum bags. It’s in the DNA, for the life of me I can’t figure out how or why he was protected from prosecution. Aside from Southern Districts Rudy Giuliani.

Bibi is a similar dip of pond scum, with the lack of a legitimate constitution, nor a cogent alternative Israel appears stuck with this connard!

Over 20 years ago I was living in Palm Beach County FL.Broke NuttyYahoo went house to house of wealthy Jewish Families looking for Cash..I guess he got all he needed👿

Greg Olear's avatar

No shame. Him and his wife. Completely shameless.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

International war criminals can be placed under house arrest… missed opportunity!

Greg Olear's avatar

So many awful people, good lord.

Jonathan D. Simon's avatar

Will he pay? Will he walk? Will he, like a super-massive black hole, suck our whole country down into his agonized Wagnerian psychodrama, leaving it a smoldering ruin?

Part of the horror of this moment is that I can't even venture an educated guess. I'm not a fatalist but I can't help feeling that the answer to those questions depends on who is writing the script of our play and what kind of mood they're in.

Greg Olear's avatar

This is perfectly put, Jon, and I agree. It's impossible to predict. No outcome would surprise me, including aliens suddenly making themselves known and saying, "Okay, enough, the experiment is over!"

Elisabeth Iler's avatar

You are brilliant, Greg Olear! I recently recommended your March 2020 piece on Dump’s connection to the mob on Heather Richardson’s LFAA Substack. Everyone loved it and some signed up for your excellent coverage. I am agog at the depth and breadth of the dump era’s crime spree. Yes, his entire life he has been a criminal. I grew up in NYC during his “reign” there in real estate scams and was always sickened by him in every way. When he was “elected”, I was in bed for a week, unable to move. I think justice will prevail. In seven short months, SC Jack Smith has pieced together an incredible amount of evidence. I think dump is sunk, at last. Many thanks, again for your exceptional writing and coverage of this period in American history.

Greg Olear's avatar

Thanks so much, Elisabeth. I did see more comments on that story the last week or so, and I appreciate it.

The whole thing is so awful, it's really hard to wrap my mind around, even though I've been trying to do that for seven years now. I feel like we are all in a state of suspended animation until Jack Smith drops the hammer. Assuming he does.

Elisabeth Iler's avatar

Jack will drop many hammers, I am sure! You are a great writer, keep writing for us! And for posterity. I want my great grands to know about what you saw and what you said! Thanks, Greg!

Helen Stajninger's avatar

Elisabeth, because you referred Greg’s article on HCR from March 2020 regarding Trumps mob connection , I am now a subscriber to Greg’s great Substack.

I too was I’ll when Trump won in 2016, and still am.

Elisabeth Iler's avatar

Helen, I am so glad you subscribed. He is a great journalist and has a handle on the era of dump and his krakens. Ginni Thomas gave me that word, the only thing I will ever thank her for. Hope her ass gets fried in federal prison asap. Her hubby too. All of them! But Dump most of all. I am more activated than ill at this point, ready for anything to help save our wonderful people and wonderful country. Keep up your spirits, dear!

Greg Olear's avatar

Thanks, Helen! Welcome.

Y'know, I used to think that it was Mitch McConnell's fault that this fucker remained in power. But there is a matrix here, and the ones within it WANT this asshole to stay where he is. He has no agency.

He is held in place by his short and curlies and because he is so criminal and corrupt, it is easy to make him do whatever these dark wizards want. I think he has feared for his kids' and his life from the very first moment he took a dirty rubel.

The media are complicit, and keep him in place for the power it gives them to suck up attention and money. The dark wizards run that scam, too. McConnell, whom I have come to view as less powerful than we are led (by the media) to think, is a henchman. Leonard Leo is the darkest magi we are aware of, but I think there are others. And I think they laugh at us all every time we get wrapped around the trees of politics. They know that all that really matter are the winds of power.

William E. Becker's avatar

Unfortunately, I think your first sentences are accurate...that he is the head of a self-supporting system that clears the way for him. And you are correct, the media are, for the greatest part, complicit.

Hopefully, Jack Smith has the gumption and will to swing the terrible swift sword he possesses. Right now, he is the most important American in our history.

Whitney McKnight's avatar

At least in this moment he sure is.

McLain's avatar

Yep. But I would disagree that he fears for his kids' lives. He only values himself.

Greg Olear's avatar

He would send them to prison for ten years to save a few bucks. He's incapable of love.

Whitney McKnight's avatar

The Ivanka thing is so beyond creepy. And death to the kids' mother by pushing her down the staircase. How Soviet. I mean, allegedly.

Whitney McKnight's avatar

Okay, take Eric off the list.

Greg Olear's avatar

I think you're right that the ones we see are not as powerful as the ones we can't, but the ones we can see also have a lot of power. I'm interested to see what will become of Leo, now that he is being made more famous. He has access to enough money for it not to really matter, but I suspect he does not enjoy people protesting in front of his house.

Whitney McKnight's avatar

No problem. He will just ask his collection of pawns on SCOTUS and in Congress to create a new law like the one that got passed when people started protesting in front of BK's house. Watch the facial recognition camera towers go up on that secluded street in Maine any day now...

Elisabeth Iler's avatar

He just lost a case to a protester on public property near his mansion in Maine. He is really bad juju, Mr. Leo. For a long time. Talk about cancer cells metastasizing!

Katie's avatar

At least with Nixon and Watergate..the MassMedia of the day was always harping on "TRICKY DICKY"..Our Oligarch owned and operated MassMedia is pretty much supporting him..and Amplifying his Message(rhetoric)😞

Earl Heflinger's avatar

I’m so sick of this POS getting away with crime after crime and being treated differently from any other criminal. Everyone else who takes classified documents is detained pending trial. And now we have to watch him campaign for the job he was fired from and stole from! Will this national nightmare never end?!

Greg Olear's avatar

Exactly! When?!?

Steve B's avatar

Will Donald Trump pay for his crimes? I think it's clear that he is, was, and will always be a criminal, so it's really not a question of if he will pay, it's more a question if our institutions of justice are up to the task. His support is waning, and he can't mathematically win the 2024 election without a grandiose, obvious amount of cheating, so the presidency won't stand in the way of serving justice to him. He does, however, have a knack for slipping out of the chains of justice relatively easily. Either a crooked, cynical Republican-controlled Senate in the past, or a few hidden MAGAts on a jury in the future, could do it. So, although he SHOULD pay for his crimes, it's still a toss-up if he will. The mountain of evidence seems as large as the mountain of evidence against O.J. Simpson, but we know what happened there. I guess we'll see. Let's say I'm not placing any bets on the outcome.

Greg Olear's avatar

Ah, but the Juice wound up in prison anyway, so participation in another crime. Before that he had a book deal with the editor who was having the affair with Bernie Kerik...just so we can play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon here. And now he's back on Twitter, offering opinions, like nothing's wrong.

It does not appear that DOJ is up to it, because to really do the job, much of the GOP rot has to be removed. We need some sort of Truth & Reconciliation program where GOP pols admit to wrongdoing in exchange for no prison time but the promise never to hold office again. I doubt that will happen, either. We forgave the Confederates pretty quickly, after all. We suck at this.

The good news is, assuming he stays healthy, Biden will trounce Trump in '24. I don't think the pundits and pollsters are prepared for what a major asskicking is coming.

Steve B's avatar

By the way, Greg, when this is all over, either Trump dies or is put in prison and THEN dies, I would hope you'd have a book ready to go on everything you've ever written about him and his minions. I would think you could easily retire on the proceeds of that alone. I'd buy the kindle version AND an autographed hardcover!

Elisabeth Iler's avatar

Me too, Steve!

Greg Olear's avatar

Thanks, Elisabeth! And thanks again for recommending me to your friends at HCR.

Greg Olear's avatar

Thank you. That's a good idea! One of the challenges of writing about Trump is that the story never ends. With Dirty Rubles, I used the coming election/Muller Report as a sort of frame. But Trump is prison would make the job much much easier...and maybe some publisher will consider me now, as they did not in 2018, because back then I didn't "know anything."
