We must modify the filibuster so Manchin and Sinema will get on board. After decades of republican f**kery, it appears to be the last hope of democracy.
I have a couple of decades on you and missed out on R.E.M., so thanks for the lyrics! I am reminded of the saying, "The more things change, the more they remain the same" which apparently tracks back to 1849 and a French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr.
On another note...I was fascinated by your actual meet up with a person you had been connecting with for a long time period! That same opportunity happened with me. I became very good friends with several bloggers on a site that Truthout.org ran briefly, before trolls took it out of the management ability of the administrator and they had to shut it down. We then followed up by contacting each other through emails and phone calls and have remained good friends for years now. But the BEST result of that "online friendship" was actually meeting face to face one of those individuals when she came to Austin to help host an exhibition of Chinese monks - their first foray out of China - they performed the most breathtaking martial arts stunts imaginable and I was given the opportunity to assist with that event.
I thought more about it and recall that the monks were billed as "the flying monks." I don't know their real Chinese name nor where they were from, but they actually did appear to "fly" at times!
I’m so glad I’ve lived as long as I have. Older than 49 but reading your piece and going to YouTube to listen again to this….it hit me how the music, lyrics…all of it shaped my critical thinking of the times. Very difficult to explain but maybe it’s like just the aroma of food bringing back the excitement of being wilder and younger…willing to hate injustice and to see stupidity more easily and not to need a Donald Trump gross out parade to speak up.
…..Dangerous: Like wise, the perversity of Trump has infiltrated our society, just like R.E.M. did my adult brain at the time. (Well, I was sort of an adult…it’s taken awhile.)
We are in a cowardly society now ….. courage dead in a way. Sick.
It’s why I’m a narativetv loyalist…a reader, buyer of books, worshiper of thinking outside different dimensions. Odd as a teen perhaps but it’s even odder now it feels, to have insight of any kind. Appreciate your writing. Happy to see you with LB . We are going for 2 weeks to the Adirondacks in August…camped there as a NYC kid… it was heaven.
This is a great song. I have all their stuff, but I admit, it's been a while since I've listened to it. (It's a problem when you have over 3,600 albums!) Strangely, I never liked them much until Losing My Religion came out. But then I came around. Maybe your son will, too.
We must be very close in age because we share that discographic timeline. I’m still listening too.
Reading about you and LB connecting in the flesh warms my heart.
It was great! We had a really nice time.
I’m considerably older than you.
I well remember Watergate.
And Ronald Reagan, too.
North Korea is invaded by K-Pop
Music has has no borders
Picture Kim throwing’ out a stop!
A lot of us in this land
Like you, will not quit listening
To music w/o boundaries from this band
A little Sunday verse! Thanks!

Wow. Prescient much? Those lyrics pack a wallop. The musical counterpart to Face In The Crowd.
I'm 55 -- luv R.E.M. still

It's great when that stuff happens. It really is!
Cool!!

My sentiments exactly. Thanks for the powerful REM lyrics.
Listening to Losing My Religion now. I’d heard about R.E.M., but didn’t know much. Thanks—never too late!
I can confirm-- I'm 40 & still listen to R.E.M. I referenced them in conversation myself this week.
I have several memories of stopping to listen to R.E.M. Seems unique for an artist to have such an effect. They're incredibly profound -like you!
Thank you for the song.
