Greg, great piece as usual. Regarding 'Flanders Fields', ask any Canadian about it - they all know this poem as it's a big part of Remembrance Day.

Thanks, Dave. My mother said that she read it in school as well.

The Ukrainians have been taking down street signs and direction markers to confuse the Russian invaders. Their digital highway signs have all been changed to read “Russians go fuck yourselves”

On waking this morning, this article of Greg’s came quickly to mind. Heather Cox Richardson produces a piece every day, Lucian Truscott on a random schedule, Greg on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

Here’s why:

The first thing I saw this morning was a note from a friend saying that Heather had made a mistake (Zelensky *not* dressed in military garb). In the last two days, Lucian posted an entire mistaken paragraph mischaracterizing conditions inside Ukraine (saying authoritatively that they were worse for the U’s than they are, per Allen Hingston, HCR subscriber in Ukraine).

In times of great change or crisis, accuracy takes a major hit. Well intentioned misinformation gets voiced by otherwise knowledgeable journalists. That’s on top of the flood of deliberate disinformation and spin.

Greg goes out of his way to make sure every statement and observation is correct.

For this standard of excellence, I am truly grateful to Greg.

I read somewhere over the past few days that when those Russian boys come home in body-bags, Putin can expect mothers, wives, sisters, and girlfriends to rise up en masse. This unnecessary and completely mischaracterized war is not the first time the women of Russia have lost their loved ones to a madman. It may be worth thinking about, because there WILL be casualties on both sides of this tragedy.

I feel bad for the Russian soldiers, too. Putin kills his own people. Monster.

I too feel the tide is turning. I think about the senseless loss of life and property this insane attack has caused and I feel the pain of those affected. But I know that as we look back at this moment in history, we will remember the way supporters of Democracy, and of Humanity, came together to shine a light on the darkness that authoritarians, dictators, and other low intelligence bully's try to spread. We will remember Ukraine as a turning point where all of those who care about each other, outnumber those who sow chaos and destruction. Every time I read your newsletter I receive an education and I am a better person for reading your words. Thank you for the poems - they capture the essence of what is happening at this point in history.

Australia is imposing sanctions.

“ It is exceedingly rare to designate a head of state and reflects the depth of our concerns. President Putin joins a very small group that includes Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Mu'ammar Gaddafi of Libya, and Bashar al-Assad of Syria,” it continued. “
