Thanks for the report. I've heard good things about the show, actually, but there's no way it could possibly capture the tone exactly. And it's exactly what you describe that makes the book so excellent.

watched the first 3 episodes - as a healthy but not particularly fit senior and from the perspective of movie meat, it is terrifying.

Sounds like they played up the horror elements, which are not as pronounced in the book.

I will have to read the book to find out. I think what I found horrifying were the suddenness and widespread effect of the disease. Maybe too soon?

Yes, this was my favorite book of 2021, next to Piranesi. Absolute magic in every page. I listened to the audiobook and then went and bought the hard copy book too so I could share it with my wife. Thank you for this.

Thanks. Now I will go get Piranesi!

"Cloud Cuckoo Land" by Anthony Doerr was pretty good too.

Sci-fi not my cup of tea but Station Eleven hit me emotionally and that took me by surprise- like you, don’t want to wreck the experience by watching the series

Right? Totally emotional, in the best way.

How many movies have been made based on a novel and it’s never as good as the novel? I understand Salingers’ reluctance! Merry Christmas Greg, happy birthday to your son and may we all have a Healthy New Year!

Well, luckily my Christmas present to myself is a new 32GB Kindle because the 8GB is almost full. At least these books that i MUST read before I die are no longer piles in the corner of my room. I actually saw references to the HBO show before I knew it was a novel, so it's now about third down on the list of the "Things to Read." I find, as I get older, that sometimes it's easier to watch a show or a movie and then read the book so I can put faces to characters that are usually amorphous blobs otherwise. I'm not that good at "casting" when I read. lol

May you and your family also have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year, Greg. Challenges ahead, for sure! I normally take the week between Christmas and New Year off -- best to be rested up for those 2022 challenges!

Thanks, Steve. You too! It sounds like the strategy for reading Shakespeare for the first time...seeing it helps.

There is absolutely nothing in the world of fiction that tops a beautifully written book, in my humble opinion. Authors who create a "world" inhabited by believable characters with an intriguing story line take me to another plane. I prefer reading to watching because I enjoy "casting" my own characters - and not with movie stars or other familiar faces! Way back when (I have no idea where this notion even came from), when I tinkered with poetry, I came to value the power of a well-chosen word. I'm not good at it, but when I do write, I strive to choose words that convey depth of meaning, rather than fill up a page with lots of "cheap" words. As you can tell, I'm certainly NO writer! Thanks for sharing this book recommendation. Happy holidays to you and yours!

Thanks so much, Ellen. I quite agree. Novels are great because we consume them at our own pace. That's one of the reasons, anyway. And you're being modest about your writerly facility!

Thanks for your support, Lisbeth! It always makes me happy to see your "it's Tuesday!" tweets.

The book is fantastic. When I finished it, I went right to the beginning and read it again. I NEVER do that.

I read 'Forrest Gump' a few years before the movie was made, and though I love Tom Hanks, the movie was a disappointment. The book was LOL funny. I never could watch the entire film.

I object to paying a penny to law breakers and child molesters. Salinger can rot.
