I also watched Adam West as Batman when I was a kid! It was one of my favorite shows. My husband and daughters have seen every Marvel movie but I…just can’t. The way you have described this version of Batman makes me want to see it.
Any child alive in the 1970s was in love with William Dozier’s Batman series, or should have been.
It’s the only TV theme song from that era with only one word in the lyrics (unless you count “doo doo doo doo ...”)
Our family occasionally watches reruns when they show up on cable. I was reminded this week, when we were watching a Wild Wild West rerun, that Cesar Romero, the original Joker, was a respected and famous actor. Same with Burgess Meredith (Penguin), Eartha Kitt (Catwoman), and others. John Astin (the genius behind Addams Family) played the Riddler briefly.
You have correctly pointed out that Batman does not belong in the Superhero genre.
Its a Detective Story. Its about a psychologicaly imparied wealthy dude who borders on how bad you have to be to rid the planet of evil people. Its Dirty Harry in Costume. Its the fore runner of Rodriguez's Sin City.
There are way too many bad movies and people on the planet today.
In my 82 years i have only watched the Batman first film and the one with Jack Nicholson.
I have only watched one Superman movie.
My film watching is to put a VHS tape of The Maltese Falcon or Kubricks 2001 in my machine.
Thanks for this scribbling. Its seems you were like Batman, wealthy parents.
My parents had a hand cranked radio until i was 10 and didnt get a tv until i was 14. But by then i had left home for work.
I hope it was Superman II, which is awesome because there are THREE people just as powerful as he is AND he loses his powers AND Terence Stamp is amazing.
Gezz Greg i dont recall. It was a film about an off planet dude faster than a speeding bullet. Well at least faster than a train. And i couldnt understand why he didnt want to sleep with Lois?
I'm going to see this tomorrow afternoon. It's on my calendar in INK. (Yes, I still keep an old fashioned calendar and I actually WRITE things down in it! LOL!)
When I first heard that Robert Pattinson was going to play Batman, I was, to say the least, skeptical. I too grew up with Adam West, and although probably not the definitive Batman, he was my first exposure to the character which made all others... weird to me. As the films got darker and darker, I began to appreciate the, let's say, "actuality" of the character -- that he was not as Adam West had portrayed him. I should also say that I was not a comic book kid, then or now, so I had no perspective on Batman's history, and I absolutely LOATHE the whole superhero nonsense we've been seeing for, it seems, about the last 100 years -- weren't they some of the first things Thomas Edison filmed? Jesus!
So, fast-forward to now, and Robert Pattinson. Embarrassingly, my only real exposure to him is from the Twilight movies, although I was still "Team Jacob," because c'mon! I have other films he's in but haven't gotten to watch them yet. But now I keep seeing great reviews of this film and his performance, AND of the whole film, in general, and can't wait to see it -- at home, because if anyone thinks I'm ever going to a theater again with the people and their cell phones ("I just have to check one thing!!"), or NACHOS -- (WHO TF ever thought that NACHOS should be crunching their way through a movie in a theater with other people???), they would be sadly mistaken.
Thanks for this great review, Greg! Sorry, I feel ranty today.
I need to get to Tenet REALLY soon. I have maybe ONE movie night a week and what did I watch last night? Scream 2022. Sigh. I know. It's probably what made me ranty today! Have a good week!
Currently there are two possible Candidates for Batman, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos..i pick Musk as Bezos had somewhat of a normal childhood. So lets cape up Elon and sic him on that Evil Les Lextor V Putin.
Boy, this was a fun article and brought back memories! I don’t think I ever missed Batman with Adam West, when it was on. Julie Newmar was Catwoman originally. I think Frank Gorshan (m) was the Joker. Anyway, it was a terrific show. I watched the original Superman too and the first movie with Christopher Reeves. Dang it, what we need are super heroes to fight the war within our own country and the one in Ukraine!
I was never going to see The Batman -- until I read this! Thanks

Then you are primed to like this movie! If you see it, let me know what you think.

The best actors were on that show. It was a thing.

I have been in love with Terence Stamp since he was in Billy Budd!
I might have watched 2 films he was in.
Superman and Starwars.

Cell phones, food and talking i. Theatres should be illegal. Its impossible to pay appropriate attention to whats occurring on the screen.
Our theater has reclining seats so no one is near. The noise was minimal. All good.
Pattinson in Tenet is insane. He's legit.

Bezos is Lex Luthor. Musk is the Joker before he falls into the vat of acid.
Well who we going get to cape up and hunt Putin? Sure aint Donald and Joe.
Songs are healing. We need the soothing balm of music to help heal the terrible pain and horrors of this war.
I recommend each of us find and listen to the special personal music that heals the individual heart.
One of mine:

Here’s an obscure anti-war song

Thanks Roland but i don't do Utube and not big on listening to music. Actually i prefer Silence for healing. Hard to find, today.
Humans have killed Silence that Roars.

Thanks! Frank Gorshin was the Riddler. Cesar Romero played the Joker, and Burgess Meredith was the Penguin. All amazing actors.
