A discussion with the novelist, biographer, essayist, and distinguished writer in residence Francine Prose, author of the new memoir, "1974: A Personal History"
Loved it! Even though that period in history leaves me with overwhelming sadness for all the boys we lost. Will now be binge reading all of Prose’s books.🤣Have a great break and rest up; gonna be wild😉
HA! I got a book BEFORE you recommended it, Greg! Of course, I haven't read it yet, but it's in the Kindle, and next up. I was taken by the GROOVY cover and the story. The Pentagon Papers was my first awakening to "The World Beneath." Watergate was in there too, but The Pentagon Papers was even more explosive, and unfortunately at the time, swept under the rug in favor of Watergate, which was more "the world above," and grabbed more attention. I'll be on this podcast this afternoon -- fascinating!
"Life isn't a matter of milestones but of moments." Rose Kennedy.
Francine Prose is to be admired. She took moments and turned them to milestones. As this Old Man looks back, I wonder how many moments I missed the significance of, they just passed me by. Those who can truly appreciate the value of a moment and turn it into something remarkable are to be admired. For many of us a moment is something to get behind us as we chase the next moment. It is truly sad that we couldn't or wouldn't savor the moment.
Enjoy your break, perhaps something momentous will occur.
I like your post but of all the people who've written the line you quote, like many of the sourcex online, you picked one of the most inappropriate persons to whom to attribute it.
Whistleblowers’ stories don’t usually end well, but I think Russo got off easier than many. I’m thinking, for example, of the Boeing whistleblowers who ended up dead. Just a coincidence, I’m sure.
I never really thought about it before, but yeah, no happy endings. It's easy to paint them as traitors, and some so-called "whistleblowers" are in fact that. Complicated!
I doubt that anyone who lived with the consciousness stimulated by the singular events of 1965-1980 -- too many to list here but including Mao's Cultural Revolution; Indonesia's Suharto coup & mass killings; the US assassinations; Nixon's Southern Strategy, Silent Majority, construction worker attacks on peace demonstrators & the candidacy of George Wallace; Prague Spring & Russia's invasion, the carpet-bombing of Vietnam & the Kissinger Chile coup that killed Allende; Paris 1968 Spring; the CIA hunt & killing of Che Guevara; Watergate & the endless ridiculing of Jimmy Carter, the most ethical, benign & above-board president in our history -- could have been surprised by the rotten side of life on Earth newly revealed by the rise of Trump & Putin & the other throwback despots, disenfranchisements & new stochastic massacres of our time.
What a terrific episode for the season finale! My reading list just grew exponentially 😁
She is great. Everything she writes is great. It really, truly is.
TGIF🎉🎉🎉Can’t wait to get into this one!
I hope you liked it!

There are some really great lines in it, on top of everything else. Just a really good read. Let us know how you like it!

Thanks so much, Old Man. I DID see a rainbow over the control tower on my way to the airport yesterday...
So many good books, so little time!
Seriously!
I ordered a hard copy.
Hope to get it signed.
Historically we keep prosecuting the wrong people. The little people. Time for presidents and their staff to go to jail.
Amen!

Well said, Richard. Well said. Alas...
