I’m glad you wrote this.

I had watched the entire hearing (that is when I first noticed how sharp Kamala Harris was!) & wondered why the Republicans were so determined that it was Kavanaugh that had to be confirmed. Surely there was another candidate with fewer skeletons in their closet! The matter of his many large debts being paid off was never addressed. If they were paid off by his wealthy parents, why not just say so? I also found his manner to be rude, not professional, particularly in his interaction with Amy Klobuchar. Surely a flawed candidate in many ways.

I mean, most people would have just bowed out gracefully. But Brett ain't most people.

Good morning Greg

A great example of "Power tends to corrupt and absolute Power corrupts absolutely"....Lord Acton, 19th century historian and politician. We have become or are still a country that has advertently or inadvertently having given too much power into the hands of a relatively few, naively hoping that they had a solid moral compass. It is incumbent on us to find the means to shed them of some modicum of power, eg: Presidential pardons, campaign funding parameters, Electoral College, etc.

Keep up your good works, for all of us! Thanks!

It feels too much like the powers that be are more concerned with protecting one another, regardless of party, that in protecting democracy.

Expand full comment

Yes, I have a very strong sense that from their positions of power, they have become, if not already had been, self-serving and each other serving rather than serving the constituency that they were elected to represent. We know that “we” are attracted to people of power and authority, as in parents, and when we identify with them, we want to be like them. If these politicians have politicians as their role models, the role modeling is prime for the corruption that we have….it is not a moral value based model anymore. Let’s work to make changes, honorable ones!

Thank you for doing your part!

I think the reporting and editorializing you've done suggests the obvious: Why this guy? He is the most easily owned. He has big enough weaknesses that he is easily strong-armed. He is battery operated, and it's probably easy to guess who inserted the battery.

Just like the choice of JD Vance.

Vance is the hollowest of men.

True. And he's a known commodotiiy who is in lockstep with them anyway.

We, the People, need to wake the f'k up to the fact that Republicans have all the real power because they don't care about the norms, the rules or the law. Trump, McConnell, Leo, Grassley and Wray conspired to put this sexual predator on the Court. That same conspiracy put Gorsuch and Barrett on the Court. And now what? The Leo Cabal rules the fucking country from the bench. President Harris MUST expand the Court to neuter these bastards.

Yes. It must be the first thing she does. Day One.

The super-rich and GOP are grabbing for the brass ring of Total Fascist Power.

They don't care about law or deaths or poverty or suffering, they only care about power.

They know they will be swept from office in November, so they are destroying our chances of voting as fast as they can.

And when Kamala wins, THEN COMES THE NEVER-ENDING GOP MAGA COUP D'ETAT.

Expand full comment

I'm hoping this is the death rattle of the fascist movement here.

Expand full comment

It will either be the death rattle or the launch pad of super-fascism, depending on our control of the Senate and the House. Corporations in Germany loved Fascism.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Greg! This scandal needs a lot more light and thank you for providing the clear path for anyone who is interested in how our Court is being manipulated, by whom, and especially for who. I believe this is possibly the way into the entire web of corruption. As you say, no one who watched Dr. Ford's testimony which seems to me like it happened last week, can ignore her truth and urgency. Except for my pathetic excuse of a senator, that is. I will share this widely, and thank you very much for your diligence and respect for the rule of law. Thank you.

Greg, you know and I know, Kav was bought and paid for by Leo and pals. That Grassley and the devil incarnate, McConnell are still living creatures is beyond me. What fountain of youth serum are they drinking? Why can’t we get our wish of them fading away? Back to Kavanaugh…he’s as dirty as a pig wallowing in mud but then so is Chris Wray. Pieces of shit by the tons in the R Party. Wish the Dems would just tell all of them to fuck off and say it with sincerity.

I think evil pickles these guys. None of them look particularly happy.

Why is Christopher Wray still in charge of the FBI? And Garland still AG???

Why indeed.

Yes. THIS!

Stagnation without representation. We don't seem to get a say because we're normally not like that. You didn't see anybody out there screaming and crying when Trump and Co. tried to disenfranchise millions of people that voted against him. Internally, yes, but we didn't make performance art out of it. It's the same thing with Wray and Garland. Wray hasn't stirred up many waves that people have noticed, and frankly, Garland hasn't really done a damned thing of note. But they've both been keeping their heads down, so they fade into the woodwork. I would have the same question about FUCKING Louis Dejoy, who is STILL Postmaster General. I don't know about others, but my mail in the southwest suburbs of Chicago has been fucked up for at least four years. There was a time, before Dejoy, that you could set your clock by WHO was going to deliver your mail and at what time. No more. It can be a different person every day, delivered between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM. But Dejoy is another one that has kept his head down, hoping no one would notice him, and it's worked. I won't even mail my ballot back this year. I'm taking it personally to an early voting site. The US Mail, for me at least, has become absolute shit.

Sorry to have hijacked your Christopher Wray and Merrick Garland, but Louis Dejoy just pisses me off! They ALL need to be ridden out of town on a rail!

How could I forget DeJoy—another crook installed by his orange fascist buddy? I thought Biden nominated another Dem to that P.O. Board. What’s going on there?

Expand full comment

After having several payments including property taxes undelivered for a month resulting in fines and late fees, I've stopped sending any crucial material through the mails anymore. I too hand delivered my ballot last week to the County Clerk for that reason. DeJoy is as unfit as trump.

Multiple points for immediate action to reform the FBI are indicated here and in other experiences. One is to reorganize the autonomous, right wing FBI NY Field Office that initiated the October, 2016 Surprise that dealt the coup de disgrace to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, revoke the pension of Kalstrom who headed it & fire any of the perpetrators still around. Biden should initiate this in his final month in office. If Harris is able to take office, her first official act should be to fire FBI Wray for cause. Andrew McCabe would be an appropriate substitute, with full authorization to get rid of the hacks who made Kavanaugh's confirmation such a travesty.

Expand full comment

Yes!! Andrew McCabe, and it would be nice to see the return of Marie Yavonovich, Sally Yates, Alexander Vindman, and Fiona Hill.

I thought Kalstrom died, but I may be wrong. I'd love for Joe to go Darkest Brandon after the election.

Darkest, darkest Brandon would also pardon Hunter. I desperately want to see THAT thrown in the faces of the MAGAts.

This is brilliant. The way you insert hilarious observations into this series piece. The line about more skeletons in his closet than a spirit Halloween warehouse was so good. But seriously why this guy? Hope we can turn things around in my lifetime.

With the knowledge that it would take at least five justices to overturn Roe v Wade, I think the "why this guy?" becomes easier to see. He had skeletons -- A LOT of skeletons -- and much like the Mafia (maybe EXACTLY like the Mafia), Kavanaugh was rewarded with his debts paid off, his reputation wiped clean, and a lifetime appointment to the Court, in exchange for that Roe v Wade vote ("We need you to do us a favor, though."). Republicans play a long game as they always have. Abortion has been their hobby horse for fifty years, and they finally got their chance to kill it. And, as what usually happens in these cases where Republicans get their way, they're going to "reap the whirlwind" next month. Unlike 99% of events that happen in the US, Roe has NOT been forgotten, and people haven't been calling next month "Roevember" to be cute. Kavanaugh is a pawn who doesn't seem to know he's a pawn. I'd bet he thinks that he's on the SCOTUS because he's QUALIFIED to be there. LOL. Just LOL. Have another beer, Brett.
