It could have been worse and the most revolting part was the complicity of the police and watching Don move his wicked chess pieces so effectively--holding back support for the Capitol Police, not checking on his VP and his family, encouraging the mess, then loving them. This scar will be with our nation forever. I hope all the judges were worth it.
Trump incited an insurrection in which people died. He must be removed from office and prosecuted. If we don't remove him now, he will do ANYTHING to evade prosecution and prison. He will happily start a NUCLEAR WAR just to evade prison. He must be stopped NOW.
It was bad enough. To state it could have been worse, while true, minimizes the seriousness of what actually took place. Such a statement is usually said in an attempt to ease the pain of a tragedy. Useful, necessary, comforting but not always appropriate. This is one of those times in which minimizing the seriousness of what took place, is neither wise nor appropriate.
I compared it to the sack of Constantinople, so I'm not sure that I'm minimizing anything. That certainly wasn't my intention. 1/6 was the worst day in this country since 9/11. It literally makes me sick thinking about what happened. With that said, if you read it that way, that was a failure on my part. This was a hard one to write.
I didn't read it the way Lib heard it. I didn't hear any minimizing at all, on the contrary.
People are stunned. People are in shock. "This was a hard one to write" resonates so clearly to me, like a bell. I have been emotional for 3 solid days. Yesterday I woke up and started crying, then it would stop and start again all morning. I experienced more emotion in 3 days than I usually go through in a month or two. I spent the entire day yesterday writing on HCR, processing, investigating and understanding the entirety of this event and my feelings about it. The fact that you managed to put out a coherent piece, Greg, is remarkable. Heroic.
Absolutely, no question, 1/6 is the worst day in this country since 9/11. My wife goes a step further: she says 1/6 is worse than 9/11 because the attack is on us, the people, it's a personal attack on our representatives, our delegates in Washington. We delegate authority to them. They represent us. They *are* us. The Capitol is our house. So this one is personal.
The White House ordered and led an attack on the U.S Capitol.
The President ordered an attack on Congress.
This is unprecedented. We are all reeling. To suggest anything is being minimized by a sensitive, brilliant, completely devoted and dedicated messenger of the truth and of the news is actually cruel.
I am not pleased with your suggestion, Lib.
On the contrary, my heart goes out to a man who was fearing the worst for our delegates, our personal delegates in Congress. Gratefully my mind didn't go there, thank my lucky stars. Just sticking to what actually happened, rather than what could have happened, was hard enough. I can only imagine the churning horror of allowing my mind to think of what could have happened to our chosen leaders. I know that intent was on the agenda of that mob, but I wouldn't let myself speculate. I was sticking with actual events. THANK GOODNESS.
I don’t believe the implication was intentional. I took issue with that statement because it was the opening paragraph which, to me generally sets the tone for everything written after.
These next 2-4 years are only a reprieve... Trump (and family) are not going away, and didn't Hitler come back after a situation not too dissimilar to this one?
(Nicely done! Now I want to go read some Byzantine history)...
also the zip ties are the ones people use around the house: they are called flex cuffs and are specifically designed to act as handcuffs for both hands
You didn't say it, but I'll wager that Erik Prince's fingerprints are all over this attack. Did he fail, did the US intelligence community/military unknowingly intervene, or was it intentionally a dry run? Not savvy enough to determine whether well-armed pix are of EP thugs or USS so don't know whether to be reassured, dubious, or deeply fearful.
They have already stated that they (MAGA) will be back on before the inauguration so I hope the FBI NSA Police take them at their word. If Trump isn't before then it and dangerous morons like Cruz, Hawley, Jordan and their ilk remain unpunished it most certainly will get much worse and your comparison Constantinople won't be so far fetched.
My guess is the Capitol Police got a wink-wink-nudge-nudge from IQ45 to let his supporters do their thing on Wednesday, plus the leadership of the Capitol Police Force figured nothing much bad would happen since Cult45 is all about "blue lives matter." Vast underestimation - - they literally killed a cop. What's incredibly galling is to see pics of legions of Capitol Police armed & in riot gear, just waiting to bash heads several months ago in anticipation of a Black Lives Matter march in DC that was overall rule-respecting & peaceful.
Was anyone able to stomach watching "TelePrompterTubby" reading a prepared "oh shit" script yesterday? I got through about 40 seconds of it. Hollow words from a soulless, nasty, immature, dangerous creep...
40 seconds, that has to be a record. Lawrence O'Donnell had it on his MSNBC show, but we mute the TV every time Shit-for-Brains starts speaking. Lawrence said Trump look like a hostage reading that script. I agree. "Hollow words from a soulless, nasty, immature, dangerous creep." You nailed it. I think that covers it. Oh, plus future registered sex offender, bank and tax and business fraudster, stooge and henchman for Putin, and completely corrupt public official. And soon-to-be felon serving out several life terms.
I'm not normally "delicate" or "fragile." I don't cry at sappy movies. I'm not, as some have described liberals, a snowflake. But, here we are, two days later, and I'm still traumatized by this. I work from home and have done NOTHING having to do with work since Wednesday afternoon, except respond to incoming emails from clients. Clients who, I would assume, weren't sending out stupid emails on 09/12/01 or 09/13/01, but this week, seem to be acting as though an out-of-control mob of insurrectionists storming the U.S. Capitol, was somehow a TV show, and that, now that it was over, they could get back to their normal lives. It's really astounding to me.
I've been to the Capitol. It is a hallowed place. The Capitol Rotunda is especially sacred to most Americans. We have seen several revered people lie in state with throngs of citizens passing through to pay respects. To see those disgusting animals just wandering around, and then rioting in the Capitol Rotunda was especially galling. AND taking over the Senate chamber, AND occupying the House chamber. Some of the more coherent ones could be heard saying that the Capitol was the "People's House," and that gave them a right to come in. I would vehemently argue that no, in fact, THEY are not the "people" being referred to in the phrase, "People's House." They are insurrectionists, intent on overthrowing a legitimate government for their -- I have simply run out of appropriate adjectives -- for their Trump. They dress like patriotic idiots. They scream and shout that they're the REAL patriots, but I'll bet that NONE of them are feeling the way ACTUAL patriots are feeling. Patriots who don't WEAR their patriotism, so everybody else can see just how patriotic they are. How do these people DARE call themselves "patriots" when again, they're marauding under that FUCKING Confederate flag?? "But, muh heritage!" my ass. That flag should be as illegal here as a Nazi flag is in Germany. And yes, I'm fully aware of the curtailing of First Amendment rights of that, and it should still be an ILLEGAL flag.
The silver lining, if you can call it that, is that this action confirms, for anyone who had doubts, that these people are JUST who you thought they were. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz are just who you thought they were. George Will, who I can't imagine agreeing with on much, marked both of these fake Senators with the red "S" for seditionists in The Washington Post, yesterday, and his column couldn't have been more accurate. They must be scrubbed from our politics, along with other well-known seditionists, who think that because Trump lost the election, it was somehow rigged. As for the Trump Cult -- ALL of them, not "half of them" -- they can go straight to hell. If they thought they were "forgotten" before Trump came along, I will eagerly join the campaign to forget them again. We live in a democratic-republic with politicians winning and others losing. If they think for a second that they will always "win," they'd better think again, and again, and again. It's time to stand up and "take the country back" from the tyranny of the weak.
Yes, they also put police in harm's way unnecessarily. The more we learn about this, the worse it gets.
Trump incited an insurrection in which people died. He must be removed from office and prosecuted. If we don't remove him now, he will do ANYTHING to evade prosecution and prison. He will happily start a NUCLEAR WAR just to evade prison. He must be stopped NOW.
I'd like to think if he ordered a nuclear strike, he would be ignored.
Apparently Nancy Pelosi talked to the Joint Chiefs about this.

exactly
At least one of the mob in the Capital was arrested with a semi-automatic...others had guns and zip ties.
Remember the ABC TV Series Designated Survivor in 2016? I avoided watching it because I thought it was too unbelievable.
These next 2-4 years are only a reprieve... Trump (and family) are not going away, and didn't Hitler come back after a situation not too dissimilar to this one?
(Nicely done! Now I want to go read some Byzantine history)...
I would bet at some point soon, Trump will "disappear" and show up in Moscow or Saudi Arabia
I'll hope and pray along with your betting.
also the zip ties are the ones people use around the house: they are called flex cuffs and are specifically designed to act as handcuffs for both hands
typo: they AREN"T the ones that people have around the house.

Great post, very scary. Thanks.
Ok, I have to share something my wife saw on FB. She's ever the intrepid seeker of levity, esp. dark levity.
from Alex Marshall @grlalx
It's only a coup if it comes from the Coup D'État region of France . . .
. . . otherwise it's just sparkling white supremacy

Cult45. That's beautiful. Perfect description of his Kool-Aid followers.

Love your post, Steve. I'm right there with you. These dirtbags violated OUR house. It's personal. Fuck those POS losers.
Soooo...Twitter just banned Shitler. In the WaPo comments, someone wrote: "Long overdue. 'Diaper change in the Oval!'" 😆😂🤣
My wife saw this live on TV, Jan. 6:
That guy with the Camp Auschwitz shirt, you know what it says on the rear of the shirt?
"Staff"
Camp Auschwitz Staff
OM, had missed this.
