And "This means torpedoing the filibuster, expanding the Supreme Court, adding D.C and Puerto Rico as states, doing away with the Electoral College" ... none of which seems likely until we get some King Kong kompromat on Manchin and Sinema

While I love the idea, my first thought is: why would we want to unleash our sick society on to unsuspecting Canadians?

I'm swooning already! Personally, I love this idea. Great article, Greg. I love your writing style. (Just sayin')

I have to say that the absolutely best sushi I have ever eaten in my life was in . . . Winnipeg. Yep--Manitoba, the most landlocked region of all landlocked regions. It's a great city, although it has been a long time since I was there. So "True Canada" might be a whole lot less scary than one might think, as friends who teach at the U of Alberta are quick to point out.

I have spent far more time in Ontario, especially Toronto, Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Stratford. My experience there was that Canadians were great. The problem was the Brit ex-pats who were uber-entitled banker-types. But that situation lessened a lot over the decades. Southern Ontario is a lot more "British" than one might think.

I would venture to suggest, however, that Canada might object to being absorbed by the USA. They really don't consider us particularly salubrious neighbors.

This would solve the problem of having to literally pack up and move from Jesusland to the Great White North...which many of us have contemplated. Incidentally, it pleases me greatly to see Austin #7 on that list!

This sounds GREAT! On paper. The downside is, what's in it for Canada? Why would they want the loud, obnoxious, deplorable MAGA crowd to invade their country? You don't think for a second that the MAGAts would stay down here, do you? What with all the wildlife they can go kill and take pictures and videos of themselves doing it? I don't. No, we fouled this land letting these cretins get a toehold on our democracy, and it's our job to fix it before fouling someplace else. This would be the same as trying to find another planet to live on because we fucked up this one!

Sorry to be the turd in the punchbowl, but Canada should remain a very nice place to visit and/or move to, but not become part of the "United" States. That's just wrong.

General comment: Thanks for all the great notes I've gotten today, both here on the comment board, via email, and on Twitter. What I did not consider in my US-centric piece is that Canadians like being Canadian, and would rather not get rolled up into the US, despite our superior pro football league. Again: thanks for the good discussion!

Years ago there was talk here in British Columbia that Washington State, Oregon, and California should/ could join together with BC to form it's own union, state or whatever you want to call it, however this chatter has died down since covid45 came on the scene. As a Canadian I like the idea of the west coast in it's entirety, including Alaska being a part of Canada. The southern red Sates- not so much.

Intellectually I like the idea of a 'United States of Canada' with the 'Jesusland' left where its, but my gut instinct is no, not quite yet.
