The country is abuzz with hope. This is how it feels to be psychically nourished. Thanks for all the hard work, sir. When you get back home, revel in the house whose young are fledging!

Beautiful sign, Sharon. Thank you for creating it!

Safe trip! Successful college! (I always feel envious this time of year. Maybe I'll go buy some "new school shoes"...) Surely the rainbow is a happy omen for the new college person.

Expand full comment

Thank you! I saw the rainbow also behind the airport control tower, but i couldn't get a photo of it. That struck me as funny somehow...

Expand full comment

No worries. I'm sure the rainbow had ATC clearance to be in that airspace for the special departure. Eons ago, in a little Cessna, I flew through a rainbow. Big surprise to me, it went all the way around, under the plane, 360 degrees -- which, of course means that there's no end, so no pot of gold. But your special, ATC-approved rainbow undoubtedly had an extra-large pot of gold waiting for your soon-to-be college grad!

Plus, you saw a "flight of two" rainbows? That's a lot of gold!

Thank you Greg. I give thru ActBlue regularly and often additionally. I don't have a yard, although I do have a Kamala sign on my front door, which IS MUCH appreciated here in London. We just got rid of the hated criminal Tories, and it feels so good (country is now Brexit bankrupt, sadly). The single most openly corrupt government I have ever experienced. Ugh. I *will* be voting via post, as I do always since I voted against Nixon, but from Tennessee. Mostly useless, sorry

Expand full comment

Oh, I wouldn't be so sure. I think Kamala's going to win at least one leans-red mystery state...

BREXIT and trump: same op, different country. So awful.

The bottom line: The GOP knows demographics are shifting and soon (already) they cannot win the vote. That means they lose power and *employment* in cushy corrupt jobs forever. Their only choice is to cheat and destroy the system

Hurray for Greg Olear, Prevail, its Podcasts, and Five/8...long may they thrive!

Off to college with Milo! (It IS Milo who's going, right?) You're JUST old enough to cry over it, Greg. "Daaaaaaad!" LOL

Seriously, have a good trip and good luck to Milo. It IS a whole new life!

Expand full comment

Thanks, Steve! It's Milo, who just graduated, AND Dominick, who took a gap year. Two in one week, to two different schools over the course of the week. Our living room looks like a Marshalls warehouse.

Two at once! (I've often wondered how parents of twins do it - the whole thing!) Congratulations! Freshman year is such an eye-opening experience - it takes them to the next level. Best wishes for your whole family. I hope you and your wife find great joy in your new life! (Just remember, they'll be back, with a whole new sense of self).

I wish you much joy. When my wife and I moved back to the US to help with ailing parents on both sides, our daughter decided to remain in London. She grew up there, a job and wonderful friends. Worst night of our lives, a goodbye dinner, next morning my wife cried every inch of the trip over the Atlantic, me trying to put on a brave face. Bottom line, all worked out. Indeed daughter and partner (no one seems to marry any more) are here for a three week visit.

Thanks for a joyful column. Read Seth Abramson's Substack, want to slit my throat. Life is about balance. Right now not a time for rationale exuberance, rather sensible joy with a twinge of worry about what might go wrong, fear of the unknown so to speak. For me the big event is October 17, early in person voting begins, in our house two votes for Kamala/Walz and Governor Stein who is running against a women hating, no exceptions for abortion, Nazi loving, Holocaust denying Uncle Tom. Daughter will vote from London, great support system for Americans living abroad.

Hope the college trip goes well. For your young one should be part of the best years of life.

Thanks, Old Man. We have been so focused on the push out of the nest, so to speak, that I have no idea how we will be when said nest is empty. I'm sure it will be a lot of weeping.

Re: the country, all we can do is what we do. As long as we're all engaged, it's ok to feel the joy. Enjoying it now won't change anything later; it will just make it that much sweeter when she wins and Dump loses.

My granddaughter came over this morning for her farewell breakfast as she heads back to school. The last thing I asked her about was voting in Roevember. She’s registering in her college town as she’ll be living there year round now. I’m very happy about that and I will miss her so much.🥰 See you tonight on the 5/8!

Thanks for watching. I think the show was good!

NY makes it really easy to vote by mail. The county elections board sent both the kids the form to fill out, all completed, for mail-in voting. All they had to do was sign it and mail it pack, postage paid!
